Potluck Philosophy

Christians should be the best at potlucks. Well, we should be the best at everything. No one else has the Spirit like we do, and the motivation to honor the one true God like we do. But guys, potlucks are in the Christian wheelhouse! And it’s not only because we practice this particular skill quite often.

I’ve thought about this quite a bit, and I think there are 3 basic principles to a potluck:

  1. Provide to the potluck enough food to feed the number of people you are bringing. Praise the Lord you don’t have to eat ONLY the food you bring. If you sign up for a salad, that salad should feed the group with you. That’d be a lot of salad for your meal if you weren’t at a potluck!
  2. Potlucks are a division of labor. Instead of one person from your group making a whole dinner to feed the family, that one person can spend that time making one dish. It’s less time! Unless you eat pizza every night from the freezer, this is less time spent preparing the food.
  3. Potlucks are your chance to bless others. The golden rule is a full effect in the potluck – treat others the way you want to be treated. You want people to bring enough food for you to eat, so you should bring enough food for them to eat. You want them to bring a delicious dish for you to enjoy, so you should bring a delicious dish for them to enjoy. Bring out the best dishes you have for the potluck.

To remember these three principles, I’ve developed a mnemonic. It’s the teacher in me, I guess. Is it any good? I’m not sure, but I hope it catches on.

“Less prep, enough food, more blessing!”
