Fast, Greasy Seafood

I eat healthy because I have a great wife. I didn’t always eat healthy. She didn’t always eat healthy either, but she was way ahead of me. I ate like a 3-year-old until I had children of my own.

No matter how we ate, though, what’s coming was a rough time in our lives. Let’s consider this a lesson in the effects (affects?) of depression on the human body.

I led our family into the dark depths of St. Louis City in order to change the world through public education. If you’ve read for very long, you already know, it changed me more than I changed it.

I took a job at a public charter school, as did my lovely wife (different schools). Not to be outdone by my ideals, I wanted to teach at an even less advantaged school, so I asked to be transferred. This new school would “actually” have students who would really “need” a teacher who “cares”. My wife did something similar because she follows her leader very well; I really am very blessed, you guys.

Two months in, we got depressed. This was way over our heads. We needed Captain D’s. For those of you who don’t know, Captain D’s IS Long John Silver’s. At least, they serve the same food with the same quality.

So, multiple times a week, we would console ourselves with fast, greasy seafood. This was a symptom of our depression. Instead of making our own food at the house, we went out to one of the worst places in town. It tasted good! But it made us feel even worse and the cycle continued. We did NOT help ourselves in this state. We needed help from others.

So, we went to Christian counseling. This was a transformative and humbling place to land. I learned so much that year, and I wouldn’t do a thing different looking back on it. There is no shame in going in for counseling, especially Biblical Counseling. God knows exactly what He’s doing in Your life, and He will provide. With His help, you won’t be in counseling forever. His intent is to help you look more like His Son. This can be hard, but it is always good.

Captain D’s is what we chose for ourselves, God had something better planned. Relying on His Spirit, we made it through better on the other side.
