I have a student (or two) that shall remain nameless. He or she is going to public school next year and asked for counsel. I thought what I wrote may be helpful to others. Even if you aren’t going into public school next year, you will one day go out into the world. This advice would also work for someone going to college next year. I pray this helps.
For public school, who you spend your time with is the most important thing, period. It’s not super practical to spend 7 hours away from the house, but also to do that alone. If you know anyone who is of quality character, spend time with them – even if they are awkward. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a Christian, though that is ideal. Before I was a Christian, the wife cleaned up her act to hang out with me. Some students have a healthy fear of getting in trouble, that’s a start.
Next, don’t start to act like a different person, though everyone will want you to. Teachers have to adapt to their students, just as much as students do to their teachers. Don’t be bombastic about your faith, but don’t hide it either. Remember: the Spirit is in you; let Him be your Guide.
Then, start studying the book of Daniel. That’s what I studied when I taught in the public school. There’s so much wisdom there for people in that situation. Daniel did NOT hide his faith, even when it came to a head. There’s a lot to learn about living amongst the pagans, especially in chapter 6. Smart pagans will appreciate you living consistently with your faith. Sadly, very few people who call themselves Christians don’t live in a consistent way.
Lastly, get constant counsel from your parents and folks at church. They are further along than you, and they’ve probably been through what you’re experiencing. Find someone who will repeatedly bring you back to Christ. This will not only help you prevent poor decisions, but it will bring you sanity.
While this may not be ideal, God can really use it! You know what you’re getting into; you have a solid foundation. Public school is one of the darkest places in our culture. But bright lights can drive out the darkness. If God is for us, who can be against us.
