This is a short story with one of the best one liners I’ve heard in person.
My dad, his buddy, and I were attending a high school basketball game. I believe we were loosely scouting some player or something. We weren’t rooting hard for either team.
That doesn’t mean that no one was all in for the game.
In basketball, there are ten players on the court the whole game, five from each team. In the stands for this particular game, there were probably 40 people. This was summer basketball at its finest.
Some time in there, amongst the random game play, a call was made by a referee. This wasn’t a game-deciding call. This wasn’t a high stakes scenario in the least bit. It was just a regular call in the midst of gameplay.
One disgruntled spectator stood up in the quiet gymnasium and loudly expressed his frustration with the referee’s call: “You had a 50/50 chance, and you BLEW it!”
That’s it; that’s the story.
I guess I can try to redeem this by adding on that refereeing is an impossible job, and you should respect the refs no matter what happens.
In other news, I often have students in class who miss questions that could have one of two answers: I think this line every single time. Sometimes, I even say it out loud.
