Commit to the Bit

I was an MC recently. Some of you are thinking, “Makes sense; I’ve seen him in class.” Well, my own father, when first hearing of my being the MC at my sister’s wedding reception said, and I quote, “Him?” My sister replied, “Yeah! Don’t you think he’ll do okay?” Confidence was fading.

Well, I was the Master of Ceremonies at her wedding reception, and it went surprisingly well. The main reason it went well was due to the prayers I prayed for the Lord to bless it. The second reason it probably went well is the preparation I put into it. I made sure I wrote out more than I would need to say, and I wasn’t precious about any of the jokes I didn’t get to say.

The part I want to impress upon you, dear reader, is to commit to the bit. Besides prayer, my commitment to being the MC and embodying the essence of a Master of Ceremonies made it all work. What did I do? Here’s a list:

  1. I wore my recently-dry-cleaned tuxedo. I was extremely overdressed. A family friend told my brother, “Wow, he’s really outdone you.”
  2. I watched a few videos to make sure I had the feel for what I was getting into. After a couple Saturday Night Live openers and an episode from the Office, I was mentally ready.
  3. I typed it all out ahead of time. Making sure I had the detailed schedule, I filled it in with valuable cheesy jokes and sentimental comments. I also printed out the wedding website, song lyrics that would be played, and the dinner menu. I wanted to be prepared for everything; I didn’t even use half of it.
  4. I put on my brave face and got excited about what I was going to do. People will follow if you lead them somewhere (especially in groups of 150).

I’ve never been an MC before, but that night I WAS an MC. I committed to it, the Lord blessed it, and I was able to serve my sister and new brother-in-law well. Afterwards, I was told by many people that I should do this more often. One guy said he’d be calling me for his daughter’s wedding. We’ll see…

Are you caught doing something you’re not as committed to? A class or activity outside of school? Commit! Nothing’s fun or interesting if you don’t go all in. “Fake it till you make it” isn’t terrible advice.

Lastly, I did say this verbatim. I’m sure it didn’t hurt!
