I didn’t grow up drinking caffeine, believe it or not. I’ve gone through spells with the stuff, but I do have something to share about the best way to get the caffeine so many of you desire.
It’s called Lapsang Souchong, and it’s a black tea. It’s easily my favorite drink besides water (everyone’s favorite drink SHOULD be water).
I stumbled upon it when the wife and I needed to find a name for our daughter. We had just had the 20 week ultrasound, so I missed school that day. We travelled out west, and we found out we were having a girl!
Well, we were both teachers, and while we had discussed names thus far, we hadn’t settled on any one name. As you can imagine, teachers have a harder time choosing names than normal people. If you say a random name to me in passing, it will immediately make me think of a past student. And while I’ve had a lot of great students…
Sorry, lost track of my thought there. Anyway, we were strapped for a name. Since I wasn’t going back to school that day, we went to a place we hadn’t been before: The London Tea Room. It was a quaint joint, but we loved it.
This was the first time I had Lapsang Souchong. I had enjoyed earl grey up to this point, and I was in the mood for something new. The description cited this particular tea as smoky. I asked to smell it. Yes, it smelled exactly like a bonfire. What a beautiful smell!
Well, it was over a cup of this tea that the wife and I chose the name Edie. We were so excited about her name (and we still are!).
So, Lapsang Souchong, if you stumble upon it: give it a try! I love it so much. I actually mailed some to a student once. But don’t get any ideas.
To commemorate the naming occasion, I later drew this picture that now hangs above Edie’s bed. I’m no artist, but it gets the point across.
